Sex Addiction is a term that describes a wide range of compulsive behaviors that are sexual in nature, including, but not limited to the following:
- Viewing pornography
- Using prostitution
- Having affairs
- Voyeurism
- Exhibitionism
In fact, “Sexual Addiction” is not about sex at all, but rather a coping mechanism. It is an intimacy disorder using sexual activity or a relationship in a desperate search for connection, affirmation or love.
Sex addicts, like other addicts, feel powerless over the compulsive behavior. The addict may wish to stop, yet is unable to do so time and time again. This can result in devastating consequences, such as:
- Losing relationships
- Problems at work
- Legal trouble
- Financial trouble
- Low self esteem
- Hopelessness
As the addiction progresses the addict commits more time and energy to their sexual preoccupation. They begin to build a pattern of behavior that typically results in acting out. When this happens, the addict usually experiences a denial of feelings, followed by despair, shame and confusion. The addict feels helpless in controlling this progression.
Treatment for sexual addiction focuses on controlling the addictive behavior working with the person to develop a healthy sexuality. However, an addict must first admit they have a problem. Once they reach that stage, education, counseling and therapy can be used to treat the addiction.
